The 2021.5 Atlas seven-seat SUV was refreshed with a bolder design as well as interior upgrades, advanced connectivity, and broadened powertrain availability. The Atlas combines hallmark Volkswagen driving dynamics and attention to detail, setting it apart from competitors like the Subaru Ascent, Honda Pilot, and Chevrolet Traverse.
The Atlas is available in eight trim levels for the 2021.5 model year —S, SE, SE w/ Technology, SE w/ Technology R-Line, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium and SEL Premium R-Line. For 2021.5, Atlas models welcome new technology. The next-generation MIB3 infotainment system with wireless App-Connect and compatible multi-phone pairing is standard on SE models and above. Atlas also welcomes Volkswagen’s newest driver-assistance features—Travel Assist and Emergency Assist on SEL models and above.
The starting MSRP for the refreshed Volkswagen Atlas 2.0-liter is $31,555 for the S model; 4Motion® models start at $33,455 with that same engine. The powerful VR6 engine is available on the Atlas SE w/ Technology models and above, starting at $38,345 for front-wheel-drive models and $40,245 for 4Motion models. The destination charge for all Atlas models is an additional $1,195.
The refreshed Atlas adds more aggressively-styled front and rear bumpers. Mirroring the Atlas Cross Sport front fascia, a bold three-bar grille extends into the front light signature, creating a more sophisticated presence, while new headlight and taillight designs feature standard full-LED lighting, including low beams, high beams, Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), and taillights. SEL and SEL Premium models add standard 900-lumen LED headlights with Volkswagen’s Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS). Automatic headlamps and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard across the lineup. Engineered from Volkswagen’s award-winning Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture, the 2021.5 Atlas is larger than any other vehicle in the Volkswagen portfolio, sitting 200.7 inches long, 78.4 inches wide, and 70.1 inches high. Though its overall height remains the same as the 2020 Atlas, the refreshed Atlas is 2.4 inches longer than before, thanks to restyled front and rear bumpers.
The interior design of the Atlas is classic Volkswagen—clean and functional, with a premium feel. Driver controls are positioned for optimal ergonomics and usability, and simple, driver-centric displays enhance involvement behind the wheel. With available contrast stitching on the surfaces and door trim as well as the steering wheel, the 2021.5 model offers a high-end environment that belies its attainable starting price. Ambient lighting, standard on the Atlas SEL and above, further highlights this upscale character. Captain’s Chairs are available on SE w/ Technology models and above. This replaces the three-passenger, second-row bench seat with two individual seats for even greater comfort and adjustability. The two-passenger third-row bench seat offers a 50/50 split, and both second- and third-row seats feature fold-flat functionality.
The advanced Volkswagen Digital Cockpit system, standard on SEL models and above, presents drivers with a fully-digital instrument cluster. Using a 10- inch TFT display, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit offers a customizable presentation of important vehicle information, with 21 viewing options, including car status, navigation, driving data, phone information, driver assistance features, and more. Users can select from multiple views, including a full screen navigation view.
Since its debut for the 2014 model year, Volkswagen Car-Net has allowed Volkswagen owners to get connected to their vehicles. Last year, Car-Net moved into the next generation of integration, with an updated mobile app, a long list of no-charge services for five years, and new subscription options. For model year 2021, Car-Net Services will be offered in three areas: Remote Access, Safe & Secure, and Hotspot. Car-Net Remote Access allows owners the ability to interact with their vehicle from miles away via the mobile app. It is offered at no additional charge for five years from the date of vehicle purchase. Features include remote start and stop (if equipped), remote door lock and unlock, remote honk and flash of lights, last parked location, and remote vehicle status display, which provides information on estimated fuel level and mileage and door and window status. Also available on MY21 vehicles equipped with MIB3: trips statistics and “Hello Volkswagen” in-vehicle advanced voice control, which can recognize natural language input for vehicle radio, navigation, and media functions.
Volkswagen’s 4Motion with Active Control all-wheel-drive system is available with both V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain options for the first time in 2021 Atlas models. The latest-generation 4Motion system is designed to activate before wheelspin occurs, helping eliminate traction losses. The system achieves this by using an advanced control function based on specific driving conditions. When operating under a relatively low load or when coasting, the front wheels are driven and the rear wheels are decoupled, a feature designed to help to save fuel. However, the rear wheels can be engaged in fractions of a second whenever necessary via the center differential, which is activated by an electro-hydraulic oil pump.
For model year 2021, Volkswagen is rolling out IQ.DRIVE® advanced driver assistance technology, featuring hands-on semi-automated capability. On the highway, IQ.DRIVE features lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to make driving easier. Around town, IQ.DRIVE alerts you to surprise obstacles in front of you, and keeps an eye around you to make driving safer.
The 2021.5 Atlas SEL and SEL Premium feature IQ.DRIVE. The system utilizes front and rear radar, a front camera and several ultrasound sensors to collect data from the surrounding area, enabling Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist); Blind Spot Monitor (Side Assist); Rear Traffic Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC); Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist); Travel Assist; and Emergency Assist.
