Volkswagen Takes Center Stage as the Exclusive Automotive Sponsor of SNL50
NBC’s SNL50 was a television event for the ages, becoming the network’s most-watched primetime entertainment broadcast in five years. With 14.8 million viewers tuning in and an additional 6.5 million watching the Red-Carpet coverage across NBC, Peacock, and E!, excitement was at an all-time high. If you watched, you couldn’t miss Volkswagen’s presence during the night’s biggest moments as the exclusive automotive sponsor of SNL50. Volkswagen’s commercial spots dominated the rankings, landing at #1, #2, and #4 among the top live airings of the week.
Volkswagen’s SNL50 Takeover Started Early
The momentum began on Thursday, February 13, when The TODAY Show featured Volkswagen during the Pop Start segment with Carson Daly. This segment alone drove 77% more engagement than a typical VW primetime TV ad, with an impact so strong it would take nearly three regular primetime ads to generate the same engagement! Coverage of “The Californians” content extended to major news and entertainment outlets like CNN (Digital Reach: 122M) and People Magazine (Digital Reach: 72M), leading to an impressive 500 earned media hits.
On Friday, February 14, the full-length version of “The Californians” custom content debuted during the historic SNL50 Homecoming Concert, streamed on Peacock. The collaboration post with Fred Armisen on social media was met with enthusiastic responses, with comments like, “I could not love this any more. Now we need the outtakes.” The buzz was undeniable—the Instagram video views surpassed 1 million, and both Instagram and TikTok outperformed social benchmarks. Meanwhile, views of the commercial on SNL’s YouTube channel soared past 525,000.

The ID. Buzz Stole the Show on the Red Carpet and in an Iconic SNL Sketch
On Sunday, the star of the Red-Carpet arrivals was none other than the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Four two-toned ID. Buzz vehicles rolled up in style, setting the stage for a dazzling “fit check” moment. Content from this grand entrance was featured on both @VW and @ENews. The commercial aired once again during E!’s Red-Carpet coverage, and the ID. Buzz commercials, “Are You Having Any Fun”, ran during the 50th Anniversary Special. With over 31 million impressions—equivalent to an in-game NFL ad—Volkswagen drove the highest level of interest and site visits for the ID. Buzz since its Thanksgiving launch.
Beyond the Red-Carpet, Volkswagen made a splash in a special co-branded spot celebrating SNL’s 50th anniversary season. The spot, created in partnership with NBCUniversal, featured the ID. Buzz in a reimagined version of the iconic SNL sketch “The Californians.” Former SNL cast members Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig reprised their beloved roles, integrating Volkswagen’s all-electric homage to the classic Microbus into the hilarious California-centric parody. The sketch playfully referenced famous driving routes in Southern California, emphasizing Volkswagen’s deep connection to the region’s car culture.
“Volkswagen’s recent 75th anniversary in the U.S. and Saturday Night Live’s 50th season are milestone moments for two iconic brands,” said Rachael Zaluzec, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience and Brand Marketing, Volkswagen of America. “‘The Californians’ is as synonymous with SNL as the ID. Buzz is with California, making it the perfect vehicle to bring back a sketch that resonates with so many. Especially in the wake of this recent tragedy that has affected communities across California, we believe in the healing power of comedy.”
Volkswagen Gives Back to First Responders
In addition to providing entertainment, Volkswagen recognized the importance of supporting the California community reflected in the sketch. Volkswagen made a financial contribution to the California Fire Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, to support first responders and their families across the state.
“With the leadership and oversight of professional firefighters, the California Fire Foundation provides immediate relief to evacuees and firefighters whose lives are risked and upended in times of disaster, resources to prepare firefighters and communities to prevent and combat firestorms that devastate our state, and emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters, and the communities we protect,” said Brian K. Rice, Chair, California Fire Foundation. “We are grateful to Volkswagen for their generosity and their commitment to support firefighters and the communities we serve.”

More Exciting Volkswagen Moments to Come
The fun isn’t over yet! “The Californians” custom content will continue to make waves, premiering during an original episode of SNL on March 8, featuring guest and musical host Lady Gaga.
Stay tuned for even more Volkswagen appearances, including Fred Armisen’s guest spot on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he’ll discuss the exciting partnership. Additionally, Volkswagen will be part of major cultural moments like Opry 100 programming on March 19, the Met Gala Red-Carpet coverage on May 5, and the SNL Season Finale on May 17.
Volkswagen’s presence at SNL50 was just the beginning, and we can’t wait for what’s next!
